Golden beaches, ancient temples, lush jungles and timeless villages. If you’re wondering what to see in Sri Lanka, get ready to discover a country that combines wilderness, spirituality and authentic hospitality. Here are the 10 must-see attractions on your itinerary.
1. Sigiriya – The Lion Rock
You can’t say you’ve seen Sri Lanka without climbing the legendary Lion Rock in Sigiriya. This ancient fortress, carved into the top of a rock more than 200 meters high, was built in the 5th century by King Kasyapa to become his residence. Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and offers spectacular views of forests, lakes and ruins. Frescoes, hanging gardens and an incredible history make the climb a unique experience.

2. Dambulla – The Cave Temple
A few kilometers from Sigiriya, the Dambulla Caves hold more than 150 Buddha statues and fully frescoed walls. This rock-cut shrine is still an active place of prayer today, and is one of the most striking sacred sites on the island. A mystical and intense experience.

3. Polonnaruwa – The Ancient City
Explore by bicycle the ancient capital of Polonnaruwa, a perfectly preserved open-air museum. Among temples, stupas and the famous reclining Buddha of Gal Vihara, you’ll feel transported back in time. A place that tells the story of the greatness of the medieval Sinhalese kingdom… and which, interestingly enough, even appeared in a Duran Duran video!

4. Kandy – The Spiritual Heart of Sri Lanka
Kandy is the city of the famous Sacred Tooth Temple, one of the holiest places for Buddhism. But it is not just spirituality: here you can enjoy authentic experiences such as a batik workshop, an ancient art technique on cloth. You will meet local artisans who will guide you step by step in creating your own unique piece. Between traditional dances, spicy dishes and green hills, Kandy conquers all.

5. Nuwara Eliya – Little England
At 1,800 meters above sea level, Nuwara Eliya welcomes you with its colonial charm and cool climate. Surrounded by tea plantations as far as the eye can see, here you can visit historic tea factories and walk sections of the scenic Pekoe Trail through the hills. Perfect for rejuvenating between trekking and steaming cups.

6. Yala National Park – Safari among Elephants and Leopards.
Sri Lanka is a paradise for wildlife lovers. In the national parks of Minneriya (in the north-central) or Yala (in the south) you can join an eco-safari and observe elephants, buffalo, crocodiles and, with luck, even the very rare Sri Lankan leopard. A powerful and environmentally friendly experience.

7. Galle – A plunge into the colonial era.
Walled city, strategic port, cultural melting pot: Galle encompasses it all. Its Dutch Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is perfect for strolling among ramparts, artisan boutiques, art galleries and ocean-view cafes. Sunset over the fort’s walls is one of the most magical moments of the trip.

8. Ella – Scenic trains and lush nature
The train ride from Kandy to Ella is considered one of the most beautiful in the world. Once you arrive, you can explore the hills by trekking to Little Adam’s Peak, cross the Nine Arches Bridge or relax among waterfalls and fragrant gardens. A place loved by travelers for its relaxed and bohemian atmosphere.

9. Anuradhapura – The Eternal City
With more than 2,000 years of history, Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most important sacred cities. Walk among ancient monasteries, off-white dagobas, and the sacred Bo Tree, born from a branch of the fig tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment. A place outside of time that still attracts pilgrims from all over the world.

10. Southern beaches-Mirissa, Tangalle and Unawatuna
After so much exploring, treat yourself to a few days of relaxation on the southern beaches. Mirissa is famous for whale watching, Tangalle for its wild spirit, and Unawatuna for calm waters ideal for swimming or snorkeling. Here time slows down, amid palm trees, fresh fish and picture-postcard sunsets.
