The European tourism landscape is preparing for a 2025 in which sustainability and technological innovation will be central to the choices of increasingly aware and digitized travelers. This is the finding of new research by Accor, conducted among 8,000 travelers from seven European countries, including Italy.

Emerging trends show how the industry is evolving to meet growing expectations for personalization, accessibility and environmental friendliness, shaping a future in which travel becomes not only an experience but also an ethical commitment.

Sustainability protagonist

Sustainability is rapidly becoming a priority for European travelers, with 73 percent considering climate change and eco-friendly facilities important elements in their travel planning, a figure that is up from the past. In countries such as Italy and Germany, this sensitivity is particularly evident, with 81 percent of travelers prioritizing sustainable options.

Patrick Mendes, CEO of Accor Europe & North Africa, stresses the need for accelerated industry efforts to turn these intentions into concrete choices: “The industry needs to provide clear and viable alternatives, reduce the impact of operations, and focus on sustainable growth.”

Possible strategies include. promotion of lesser-known destinations, adoption of low-emission transportation solutions, and incentives for eco-responsible behavior. These interventions not only respond to consumer demand, but also help mitigate problems such as overtourism.

The challenge of overtourism

Overcrowding in tourist destinations is a problem perceived by 90% of travelers, who are adopting proactive behaviors to avoid it. Some 31% prefer to travel off-season, 27% avoid the most crowded destinations, and 22% opt for lesser-known places. These trends highlight increased individual responsibility, but also an opportunity for companies to incentivize sustainable travel with targeted offers and transparent communications.
